  • Esperanza struggles with her identity and wants to move away from her home,  she feels alone in a society filled with unfair expectations.
  • I want to move again.
  • Exposition
  • Esperanza has moved a lot, but when they first arrive on Mango Street she feels a lot less than welcome.
  • You live there?
  • Esperanza gets a job when she turns 16 at a photo processing place. She doesn't know what to do during break, so she hangs out in the coat room and makes a friend, but the man makes her kiss him.
  • Rising Action
  • Climax
  • Esperanza feels that Sally is growing up too fast. When the boys tell Sally that she has to kiss every single one of them to get her car keys back, Esperanza runs and tells Sally's mom, but there is nothing that can be done.
  • Well if you want your car keys, you have to kiss each one of us.
  • Fine.
  • Falling Action
  • Esperanza goes back to her less mature friends because she feels like her friends are gorwing up too fast.
  • Tag! You're it!
  • Esperanza realizes that no matter where she goes, she will always return to Mango Street.
