  • Even though President McKinley wanted peace in the United States, a war began. At the time, Spain was in charge of Cuba. But Cuba wanted its freedom. The U.S wanted to help. McKinley took the U.S.S Maine to Cuba. But when no one was on the boat, it exploded!
  • A writer had heard about the explosion and decided to put it in the newspaper. But, when they did, they used total exaggeration to make it seem Spain did it. This is called "Yellow Journalism". When people read it they were persuaded Spain did it and wanted to go to war with Spain. McKinley had no other choice but to go to war.
