  • Alice Cogswell, daughter of physician Dr. Cogswell lost her hearing due to spotted fever in . Alice had no way of communicating and was unable to be educated.

  • Alice's neighbor, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was a very kind and intelligent and felt sorry for Alice. Since Gallaudet was home recovering from health issues he determined to educate Alice himself. Dr. Cogswell agreed to this arrangement.
  • Development of Signs
  • Alice's father still felt sorry for all the other deaf kids in the world who also needed an education, so he decided to create a school called Hartford. He raised enough money to send Gallaudet off to receive all the knowledge needed to create the school. Gallaudet received the most knowledge in 1816, in England.
  • Deaf Schools Everywhere
  • Gallaudet then spoke to Laurent Clerc and she was willing to come to the U.S to help start up the school. When they went back to the us, the funding for the school began. Finally on April 15th, 1817 The American Asylum for Instruction of Deaf opened. Alice was the first enrolled.
  • OMG yay! I can finally go to school!
  • As the school progressed sign language became more distinct. All the students at the school began to bring there native signs to the classroom, sign language was changing.
  • Wow sign language is changing a lot because of all our backgrounds
  • Then the school in Hartford was not big enough to support the entire U.S deaf population, so deaf schools started spreading all around the county.
  • Woah! Now there are deaf schools everywhere!
