Growing up, I played a variety of sports. One sport that stuck with me is basketball. Basketball is fun and a great way to stay in shape!
One night at practice my team and I were running a good amount of suicides when all of a sudden I kept getting this stabbing sensation in both of my legs. I kept running during the moment because prior to this I never had any problems with basketball.
Since I was the only girl on the team I didn't want to seem weak and pull myself out of running. I felt conflicted. I continued to run even though I was now the last and slowest person. I couldn't taken it anymore, as the pain was so unbearable that I was hardly walking.
I went to the doctor and discovered that I had a severe case of shin splints, and Achilles Tendinitis in my left leg. I never knew I was flat footed and was devastated that this had happened because it could've been avoided if I wore the correct basketball shoes. Sadly for that season I was only able to play 3/15 games.
It really sucked being benched when all you really want to do is play but you physically are incapable of doing so. Thankfully I had other hobbies such as playing the guitar and clarinet so that I could distract myself from the sadness of my injury.
Even though I am still easily prone to leg injuries, I am glad I was able to come out of this experience. It made me a stronger person.
