  • Cuba rebeled against the Spanish in 1868 and again in 1895. Spain sends Valeraino Weyler.

  • On February 15th an explosion sank the U.S.S. Maine. It had been docked in Havana harbor.
  • President William McKinley didn't want to start a war.
  • WAR!!!!
  • We must stay peaceful!!!
  • He puts the Cubans in terrible camps. Cubans ask for American help. The newspapers make false stories to help American interest in the war. This is called yellow journalism.
  • William McKinley made a final effort for peace by sending a list of demands to the Spanish.
  • The explosion killed 250 American sailors. The Americans blamed the Spanish although we don't know if it was actually them.
  • After the war was over in 1898 the U.S. signed a Treaty of Paris with Spain.
  • But after the Lome Letter, the U.S.S. Maine sinking, and public outcry he had to do something.
  • In return for a $20 million payment Spain gave some land to the U.S.
  • Here's your land
  • He demanded the Spanish compensate for the U.S.S. Maine, end reconcentration camps, make a truce with Cuba, and allow Cuban Independence. Spain excepted all but the last.
  • I demand you!!!
  • Spain recognized Cuba's independence.
  • Cuba is free from Spanish rule! Signed U.S. and Spain
  • The U.S. gained the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico. As new territories.
  • It's so beautiful!!
