Long ago, King Aegeus of Athens made a deal with King Minos of Crete that Athens would send seven boys and seven girls to Crete to be eaten by a minotaur if Crete would stop attacking them for nine years. Then, the prince of Athens, Prince Theseus, vowed to go as the seventh boy to kill the minotaur, therefore preventing the children from being eaten alive. I am Aileen, one of the seven girls. This is my best friend, Melaina.
I can't believe we actually have to do this, Aileen!
Yeah, it does suck. But look on the bright side. We're traveling on a ship with the prince! Plus, we'll be there pretty soon anyways.
The next morning, King Minos and his daughter Ariadne came out to greet us.
Hello, King Minos. It is nice to meet you. I'm Prince Theseus.
Hello, Theseus. I hear you have come to kill my minotaur?
He'll never kill that minotaur. Unless...
What are they saying?
I can't tell. Let's listen.
That night, as Melaina and I were taking a walk through the courtyard, we overheard Theseus and Princess Ariadne whispering.
And with that, she handed him a skien of yarn.
Theseus, I know you will never succeed in killing the minotaur without my help. But I can tell you a secret if you agree to take me away on your ship after you've killed it.
By the time we got inside the labyrinth, it was nearly midnight. Theseus tied one end of the yarn to the door and one to himself. He told all thirteen of us to wait by the entrance.
We were terrified.
Many hours later, after the minotaur was dead...
Thanks for letting me come on the ship, Theseus. We should stop at the next village to get supplies.
Yes, that's a great idea, Ariadne!
In the village, after we finished stocking up on supplies...
