Scout and Jem were walking out of school heading home when Jem decided to talk for the first time in weeks. He told Scout what had occurred when he went back to the Radley house.
Jem and Scout passed by the tree with the knothole but decided not to take anything. They decided to not take anything because they believed that it could belong to someone else (hiding spot). They then went home.
A couple days passed and the kids kept seeing items so they decided that whatever they ind they will claim it to be theirs. They passed by the tree with a Knothole and found to soap carvings and a watch. The carvings were of a little girl and boy.
Scout and Jem decided to write a thank you letter to whomever was leaving them the little presents.
The next morning Jem went running to the tree to leave the letter. When he arrived to the tree he noticed that the knothole had been filled with cement. Scout was very upset about it and started crying.
Jem and Scout were sitting on the porch waiting for Atticus to get home. When he got home Scout went inside but Jem decided to stay outside for a while longer. Jem was sitting on the porch until nightfall crying.
