Storyboard Text

  • Hey Emilia, how come when I kicked the soccer ball it stopped once it got to the net?
  • Because of Newton's first law of motion. All objects in motion stay in motion and objects at rest stay at rest, unless acted upon by and unbalanced force.
  • Interesting, and what causes this?
  • This is caused by inertia-the tendency of an object to do what it is already doing.
  • In other words, the ball is in motion and the unbalanced force, which is the net causes the ball to stop.
  • That's right!
  • What if the object is at rest and I kick it?
  • The ball was at rest, and you are the unbalanced force. The ball was originally at rest but you, the unbalanced force, applied a force to the ball causing it to move.
  • So basically, the ball didn't stay at rest because it was interrupted by an unbalanced force.
  • Exactly!
  • Wow! Sir Isaac Newton is so smart to come up with the Law of Inertia.
