  • They asked for help from the United States so that Colombia wouldn't conquer them
  • Manuel Amador Guerrero, the first president of Panama, talked with Philippe Bunau Varilla, a stockholder in la Nueva Compañía del Canal Frances, who was interests in selling his stocks.
  • Philippe Bunau Varilla was willing to give his stocks to the United States government to continue the separation
