A group of Panamanians guided by Jose Agustin Arango, lead the separation of Panama from Colombia in the event that the Herran Hay treaty was rejected.
They asked for help from the United States so that Colombia wouldn't conquer them
Manuel Amador Guerrero, the first president of Panama, talked with Philippe Bunau Varilla, a stockholder in la Nueva Compañía del Canal Frances, who was interests in selling his stocks.
