- On their way to the place of prayer Paul and Silas met a slave girl who had a spirit which predicted the future. This girl was making her owners lots of money by fortune telling. She followed Paul and Silas repeating her prophecy for many days.
- These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved!!
- Eventually Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and shouted to the spirit. At that moment the spirit left her
- In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!!
- These men are Jews and are throwing our city into uproar by advocating customs us Romans are unable to accept or practice
- When her owners realized their hope of making money was gone they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. They brought them before the magistrates and said:
- I order you to be stripped and beaten!
- The magistrates ordered Paul and Silas to be stripped and beaten.
- After they had been severely flogged they were thrown into jail and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully
- Guard them carefully
- At about midnight Paul and Silas were singing and preying to god and all the other prisoners were listening.
