The central idea of jealousy is prominent throughout the text. When Eddie saw that Catherine was looking extra attractive than usual because she was wearing heals when she was in the presence of Rodolpho, Eddie embarrassed her by telling her to change her shoes. "(Eddie: has risen, with iron control, even with a smile. He moves to Catherine. What's the heels for,Garbo...do me a favor will you? Embarrassed now, angered Catherine goes into the bedroom to change her shoes"(pg 26). Eddie is jealous over the fact that Catherine was trying to look good for Rodolpho.
The central idea of spitefulness is presented throughout the text. When Eddie discussed with Catherine about marrying Rodolpho she is unsure about what to do because they've just met. Eddie tells Catherine, "Katie, he's only bowin' to his passport... That's right. He marries you he's got the right to be an American Citizen"(pg 34). Eddie reacts in this vindictive way out of spite because he doesnt like the fact that Catherine in considering to marry Rodolpho.
The central idea of guilt is prominent throughout the text. "Will you stop arguin' with me and get them out! You think im always tryin' to fool you or sump'm?" (pg. 67). When Eddie knows that immigration is coming and may take everyone except for Rodolfo and Marco, he reconsiders letting them stay there and tries to get them to leave right away but its too late.
