  • WHY DO WE NEED TO EAT A HEALTHY DIET?
  • IF WE DON'T CONSUME CERTAIN NUTRIENTS FOR TOO LONG, OUR BODY'S CELLS WILL STOP WORKING PROPERLY, WHICH ALSO AFFECTS OUR ORGANS.
  • WHAT NUTRIENTS DO WE NEED TO KEEP OUR BODIES IN GOOD HEALTH? AND WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM?
  • WATER, CARBOHYDRATES, PROTEINS, FATS, MINERALS, AND VITAMINS ARE THE SIX TYPES OF NUTRIENTS WE NEED TO KEEP OUR BODIES IN GOOD HEALTH. COME WITH ME., LET ME SHOW YOU.
  • WATER: OUR BODIES ARE 55-60% WATER. WATER HELPS US DIGEST FOOD AND ELIMINATED WASTE PRODUCTS, IT MAINTAINS OUR BLOOD VOLUME, KEEPS OUR SKIN MOIST, AND IT REGULATES OUR BODY TEMPERATURE.
  • CARBOHYDRATES: THE MAIN SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR OUR BODY. SIMPLE CARBOHYDRATES ARE SUGARS THAT ARE IN HONEY AND FRUITS. COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES ARE STARCHES IN VEGETABLES AND POTATOES.
  • 6 TYPES OF NUTRIENTS TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY DIET AND THAT HELP MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS
  • FATS: PROVIDE ENERGY AND KEY COMPONENTS IN CELL MEMBRANES AND CERTAIN HORMONES. SATURATED FATS ARE SOLIDS AND FOUND IN ANIMAL PRODUCTS. UNSATURATED FATS ARE LIQUID AND FOUND IN PLANT OILS.
  • MINERALS: INORGANIC MATERIALS THE BODY USES TO CARRY OUT PROCESSES IN CELLS AND TO REPAIR OR BUILD TISSUES., LIKE DAIRY OR GREENS.
  • PROTEINS: THE RAW MATERIALS USED FOR THE GROWTH AND REPAIR OF THE BODY'S CELLS AND TISSUES. PROTEINS MAKE UP ALL ENZYMES AND A LOT OF HORMONES THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR CELL METABOLISM. PROTEINS ARE FOODS SUCH AS MEAT, CHEESE, AND EGGS WHICH CONTAIN 8 ESSENTIAL AMINO ACIDS.
  • VITAMINS: ORGANIC MOLECULES THAT WORK WITH ENZYMES TO REGULATE CELL FUNCTIONS, GROWTH, AND DEVELOPMENT, LIKE GREENS.
  • WHAT DOES A HEALTHY DIET LOOK LIKE?
  • A HEALTHY DIET CONSISTS OF ALL 6 OF THESE NUTRIENTS . GETTING MOST OF YOUR CALORIES FROM FRUITS, VEGETABLES, WHOLE GRAINS, AND WATER ARE VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY'RE RICH IN FIBER, VITAMINS , AND MINERALS..
  • EATING MORE LEAN MEATS AND FISH AND CUTTING DOWN ON FOOD HIGH IN SATURATED FAT IS ALSO IMPORTANT. LASTLY, FINDING A BALANCE BETWEEN FOOD AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS IMPORTANT SO THAT YOU USE ABOUT AS MANY CALORIES AS YOU CONSUME.
  • FUNCTIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
  • FUNCTION: DIGESTION BEGINS IN THE MOUTH, ONCE YOU CHEW THE FOOD AND SWALLOW, THE FOOD MOVES INTO THE ESOPHAGUS. THE UPPER DIGESTIVE TRACT DIGESTS FOOD AND PREPARES IT FOR PROCESSING NUTRIENTS THROUGHOUT THE BODY.. PERISTALSIS KEEPS THE FOOD MOVING DOWN. THEN, THE FOOD GOES INTO THE STOMACH, WHICH IS A MUSCULAR SAC THAT HOLDS UP TO 2 LITERS OF FOOD. PROTEINS ARE DIGESTED IN THE STOMACH AND SMALL INTESTINE, BUT FATS AND SUGARS ARE ONLY DIGESTED IN THE SMALL INTESTINE. THE STOMACH LINING SECRETES GASTRIC JUICE. THE STOMACH EMPTIES AND THE CHYME IS PUSHED AGAINST THE SPHINCTER THAT SEPARATES THE STOMACH AND SMALL INTESTINE. THE SMALL INTESTINE IS WHERE MOST OF THE DIGESTION TAKES PLACE. THE LARGE INTESTINE ELIMINATES UNDIGESTED MATERIALS AS LIQUID AND SOLID WASTES.
  • HOW DO THE FUNCTIONS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM HELP US MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS?
  • DIGESTIVE SYSTEM: A COLLECTION OF ORGANS THAT BREAKS DOWN FOOD INTO ENERGY THAT CAN BE USED IN CELLS.
  • THE BODY CELLS NEED NUTRIENTS THAT THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM GETS FROM FOOD TO FUNCTION NORMALLY.
