  • The Life of Ibn Battuta
  • Ibn Battuta was born into a family of Islamic judges in Tangier, Morocco
  • In 1325, when he was 21, he left his homeland for the Middle East. He intended to complete his hajj to the holy city of Mecca. He also wished to study Islamic law along the way
  • In Egypt, Battuta studied Islamic law and toured Alexandria and the metropolis of Cairo
  • When he finally made it to Mecca, he decided to continue to explore the Muslim world (Dar al-Islam)
  • In the 14th century, Ibn Battuta spent nearly 30 years traveling some 75,000 miles across Africa, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia.
