What is electronegativity?
Today we are going to talk about electronegativity
Atoms with low electronegativities will share the most, sometimes to the point of losing their own electrons.
The electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons when the atom is in the compound
By studying the periodic trend of electron negativity, we can esaily find how does the elctronegativity change in the group and the period
Electronegativity increases as you move from left to right across a period, and decreases as you move from up and down in a group.
The positively charged protons in the nucleus attract the negatively charged electrons.
As the number of protons in the nucleus increases in a period, the electronegativity will increase too.
In a group, the increased number of energy levels puts the outer electrons very far away from the pull of the nucleus. It's hard for the nucleus with protons to attract electrons, therefore, the electronegativity decreases.
