Hi! My name is Ethan. Ethan the Environmentalist. I know, strange word. It means to care about the environment, and to try to help it. Are any of you environmentalists? If not that’s okay. One of my best friends Peggy wasn’t either. Her name used to be Peggy the Polluter, which means she used to hurt the river. But now, she helps me protect it.
It all started when I was walking with my parents along the Ohio River. The big one right here in Louisville. You might’ve seen if your parents work down there, or if you’ve ever been downtown.
There was trash all over! I was so surprised! How could people do such a terrible thing! But I was even more surprised when I saw a girl who was littering too! Littering means she was leaving her trash along the river, and do you know who that girl was? Peggy!
“Why not?” Peggy replied. “It’s not hurting anybody!”
But it actually was hurting people, and animals! Now, you’re probably wondering why it was so bad; and Peggy was too, so I explained to her how it hurt the animals in the river, and even us! Do you guys want to hear what I told Peggy?
“Excuse me,” I said “Why are you leaving your trash by the river?”
First, I told Peggy how it can hurt the animals in the river. Did you know there are tons of animals that live in the Ohio River, even though we can’t see them all? There are ducks, fish, and more! Over 25 different kinds of animals live right by the Ohio, and there are over 100 types of fish that live in it! Isn’t that crazy?
“But what does that have to do with the trash around the river?” Peggy asked me.
“Well, in 2007, Polluters, who thought just like you did, dumped heaps and heaps trash, and other scary waste into the river; making it the most toxic river in the country. (Toxic means it’s really dangerous),”
