  • “Oh no!” Peggy exclaimed. “That’s awful! How much did it affect the animals?”
  • “Because the river had so much gross waste, and was so dangerous, it started to hurt the animals that lived in and around the river that we talked about earlier.”
  • “What’s industrial pollution?”
  • “A lot, Peggy. In fact, the Ohio River has been leading American Waterways in Industrial Pollution since 2001, according to one of my friends at Courier Journal! Can you believe that?"
  • “It gets worse?!”
  • “Well Peggy, industrial pollution is basically pollution (or waste in the river) due to industry, which are things like factories, or companies that contribute to the stuff in the water. . And since the animals are getting hurt, it’s affecting the ecosystem, and the food chain, which is basically the way the river runs. But you know the worst part Peggy?”
  • “Yes. The saddest thing is that this is happening all over, not just here. People are polluting oceans, rivers, and lakes, all over the world. Isn’t that awful? Do you guys want to know how you can help?”
  • “You might think you can’t make a difference, but you CAN! You can help by making sure you recycle things, and throw them away in the right way- make sure if something can be recycled that it is! When people throw things away, instead of recycling them, it can make its way into the water, where it can hurt animals; and we don’t want that! You can also tell other people about what’s happening. The more people that know, the more people that can help start a change. And finally, if you want, you can even ask your parents if you can help clean up around the river! It’s a big job, but if you’re determined, you can do it! Consider yourselves honorary River Rangers!”
