The Blessing Is Given
“Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed. May God give you heaven’s dew and earth’s richness- an abundance of grain and new wine. May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.”
Rebekah gave birth to twins. The first to come out was Esau. Rebekah and Isaac named him Esau because he was red and his whole body was like a hairy garment. Jacob came out after. He was grasping Esau's heel so they named him Jacob. Genesis 25:23-26
Jacob Encounters God
Esau was famished so he sold his birthright to Jacob over stew. This means that Esau despised his birthright. Genesi 25:31-34
Jacob Flees To Haran
"Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die, said Isaac." Esau was to be blessed. However Rebekah told Jacob to bring tasty food to his father. Jacob posed as Esau and Isaac gave the blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. Genesis 27:4, 27:9, 27:27-30
Jacob Wrestles With God
“I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
Jacob had a dream and he saw a stairway resting on earth, with its top reaching to heaven. Angels of God were ascending and descending from it. "This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven." Jacob called this place Bethel. Genesis 28:12-19
“I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Jacob arrives in Harran and meets Laban, Rachel, and Leah. Jacob was in love with Rachel because she was beautiful. Whereas, Leah had soft eyes. Jacob wanted to marry Rachel, however, Laban deceived him and Jacob married Leah instead. Jacob had to work for Laban for another seven years to marry Rachel. Jacob had a total of 12 sons. Genesis 29:13-18, 29:26-30
"You are my own flesh and blood."
Jacob wrestled with God until daybreak. God touched Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with God. God changed Jacob's name to Israel. Jacob called the place Peniel, because he saw God face to face and his life was spared. Genesis 32:24-30
“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
