This is known as the story of Uncle Tom's cabin. It reveals the story about a mothers experience in slavery.
This story causes the people in the North to see how horrible slavery is and resulted in them being against it which angered the south.
Fugitive Slave Act
All slaves that are fugitive or free must return to the south and become a slave.
The North and South divided themselves depending on if the states were slave or free. By dividing themselves up, it caused tensions between the two sections and affected the decisions that had to be made throughout the country. This was one of the leading causes for the civil war.
Election of 1860
Nothing valuable can be lost by taking time!
After Uncle Tom's Cabin was published, the north began to go against slavery and fight for slaves' freedom.
Compromise of 1850
The fugitive slave act was put in place in 1850. It caused all fugitive/free slaves to return back to the south. This was unfair to the slaves for they were already free in the north. It caused confusion among them and increased the tensions between the north and the south.
Nebraska: We want to be a free state no matter what the south or the Missouri compromise says!
In the election of 1860, Abraham Lincon was elected as the 16th president . He won by having 40% of the popular votes. Because of the division between the north and the south they disagreed on the vote. South Carolina seceded from the union a few years after the election.
We're leaving the union!
Within the compromise of 1850, the south gained strength due to the fugitive slave act, while the north gained another free state. Texas lost some of its territory and the slave trade was prohibited in Washington D.C.
In the Kansas-Nebraska act, it opened up the 36'30 parallel to open sovereignty. They wanted to admit a free state but in the process refrain from angering the south. As a result of the act, there was a shift in power between the north and the south. They ignored the Missouri compromise which in turn caused fear for the compromise of 1850.
