Mao tried his best to improve the economy of China, but he failed. The great leap forward was a disaster. Many people died and the economy just dropped more. There was famine and it was just very bad for Mao's reputation, and for china's citizens
And then when he tried to fix it again, he ended up getting back into power, but to get back into power he caused people to get hurt and the chaos caused the economy to drop again.
Long before Mao was in power, the Sheng dynasty was very prosperous in their economy. Their economy thrived because of agriculture and other trades like that. They traded with the countries around them and they gained from that. They even had their own form of currency, cowrie shells.
From this evidence you can see that because all of the negitive things that happened while Mao was in power, the Sheng dynasty was more economically advanced and prosperous.
