Cadmus lived in the Phoenician city of Tyre, which is parents, King Agenor and Queen Telephassa, ruled over. He lived with his parents, brothers, and sister.
The Call to Adventure
Cadmus's sister, Europa, was kidnapped by Zeus, disguised as a white bull. This was his call to adventure that broke him away from his ordinary world.
Cadmus does not refuse the call and is determined to find his sister, Europa.
Refusal of the Call
Meeting with the Mentor
The Delphic Oracle gives Cadmus advice. He says to stop searching for Europa and tells Cadmus that he is to found a new city.
Cadmus decided to listen to the Oracle and found his city. The Oracle told him to follow a cow with a half-moon symbol on it until it stopped to rest and that is where the city would be founded. Cadmus obeyed the Oracle's instructions and set out to follow the half-moon cow.
Crossing the Threshold
Cadmus wanted to sacrifice the half-moon cow to Athena to thank her for allowing him to make progress on his journey. In order to complete the sacrifice, he needed pure water, so he sent his friends to look for it. Unfortunately, they were all killed by a dragon. So far, Cadmus's allies include the Oracle, who gave him advice, and Athena, who let him make progress. The dragon is his only enemy in this point of his journey.
