  • In the late 1770s, a legal system was created in Australia to manage the new settlements.
  • Due to the large distance, colonies were largely self-sufficient and laws would vary in each colony.

  • Attraction towards a federation began in the 1880s.
  • Australasian Conferences began and representatives from each of the capital cities met to discuss.
  • These conferences ran from 1890 to 1897
  • The Commonwealth of Australia Act 1900 was drafted after the succession of referendums in six colonies.
  • After the approval of the constitution in Australia, the law was then passed to Britain.

  • At this time, Australia did not have the authority to pass this law and needed approval to become its own nation.

  • The British parliament has passed the constitution act on the on 17 July 1900.
  • On January 1, the six colonies officially became the commonwealth of Australia.
  • The first Australian Prime Minister (Edmund Barton) is shortly elected after this.
