  • Long legs allowed longhorns to travel long distances. They could endure hot or cold weather. They even ate cacti and could survive on little water.
  • Thousands of people were drawn to Texas by the promise of spectacular fortunes to be made in the oil business. Beaumont originally had 9,000 residents but then it swelled to a city of 50,000. Sour Lake grew from a small village to a city of 10,000 in a matter of months.
  • Railroads promised cheap, fast, and reliable transportation. A thirty five  mile trip that took a day and a half to travel by horse took less than two hours by a train. It was also cheaper to ship goods by railroad. Railroad rates were less than fifty cents.
