  • In 1889 the army had overthrown the Brazilian monarchy and established a republic.
  • The new leaders were chiefly controlled by landed elites, who had become wealthy from large coffee plantations.
  • When the Great Depression hit, it devastated the coffee industry, weakening the landed elites control in the process.
  • The Brazilian people made Getúlio Vargas president, later making himself dictator.
  • Vargas made major changes, changing it to a 8-hour work day with minimum wage. He constructed a New State, making civil rights were restricted, and political parties were outlawed.
  • Finally after a 15 year term, Vargas was forced to resign as dictator.
