  • Johnson (36th president) faced the increased anti-war sentiment and political pressure. In March 1968 he announced an end to the bombing of North Vietnam. Peace talks between the United States and North  began in May but were frozen. In November the United States stopped the bombing of the North. South Vietnam and viet Cong later joined the talk.

  • While the struggle the 37th president was elected which was president Nixon. Henry Kissinger was one of Nixon’s chief foreign-policy advisers. Nixon and Kissinger acknowledge that it very unlikely for them to win the war. They insisted, however, US gave a chance for South Vietnam to survive, but the solution turns up to decrease U.S ’s credibility internationally.
  • Through a program called Vietnamization, Nixon began to gradually extract US ground troops. the United States began transferring control of the ground war to the South Vietnamese forces. The troop withdrawals were popular among the American public.To many U.S. soldiers still in Vietnam, however, the withdrawals seemed to emphasize the apparent pointlessness of the war. Major problems included drug abuse, desertion, and even violence against officers.
  • Although he reduced the amount of us soldiers, he still continues with the decision of bombing North vietnam. He also expanded the war into Cambodia and Laos. He wants to enforce a secret bombing mission of the communist sanctuaries and supply lines in cambodia in 1969-70 and in Laos in 1970. He also authorized an incursion across the Cambodian border by a U.S. and South Vietnamese force .  This action increased the opposition to the war. Peace Talks continued to stay motionless.
  •  In 1972 the North carried a large invasion of the South. In response,US bombed North Vietnam as well as the invasion forces in the South. U.S. forces also extract the harbor at Haiphong, where the North received Soviet supplies. The North’s invasion had failed. After the defeat, the leader of the north announced that they were ready to conclude the peace talk, meanwhile, kissinger and Le Duc Tho of north vietnam secretly chatted about the peace treaty.
  • Later on, the setback in the talks led nixon to enforce a 11-day bombing mission of Hanoi, and other cities. At the end, the peace treaty was signed on Jan 27, 1923, it was signed by US, south, north vietnam, and Viet Cong.south vietnamese will have the right to determine their future. North vietnamese soldiers who were already in the South were allowed to remain but could receive no reinforcement. At the end it was successfully established and keeped the peace.
