  • EXPOSITION
  • CONFLICT
  • RISING ACTION
  • The exposition of the story is when Mr. Summers begins to call the head of families up to draw a slip of paper.
  • CLIMAX
  • The conflict of the story begins when Mr. Hutchinson opens his slip of paper to reveal he had gotten the one marked with the black dot. 
  • FALLING ACTION
  • After Mr. Hutchinson had gotten the black dot, his entire family would have to draw in which, one of them would get the black dot.
  • RESOLUTION
  • After everyone in the Hutchinson family drew, they all opened their slips and it was revealed that Mrs. Hutchinson had gotten the one with the black dot.
  • The village slowly began to crowd around Mrs. Hutchinson, each grabbing pebbles from the pile the children created before.
  • The 'resolution' in the story begins as a pebble is thrown at Mrs. Hutchinson's head, to this, the woman yelled, "It's not fair!" Before the entire village was upon her.
