Today we are learning about how George Washington's policies.
When George Washington became president there was a lot of pressure from other countries on who to support in the French Revolution, but he decided to stay neutral.
France argued that they should support them because they helped them during their revolution and they signed a treaty saying that they would help them during their war. George Washington said they the treaty didn't matter because the King that they signed it with is dead.
Jefferson wanted to support France but Hamilton wanted to support English. Washington decided to stay neutral.
France! Small government! Farms!
England! Big Government! Banks!
George Washington believed that we were to fragile and new of a nation to participate in a war. France and England we mad at the United State and so were some other people, mainly Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson was angered with the decision to stay neutral and also by Jay's treaty. Jay's Treaty is a treaty made by John Jay negotiated with the British government. This made the cabinet divide. Jefferson resigned to run for president. Washington didn't run for president.
Alexander Hamilton wrote down Washington's Farwell Address for him but he had some concerns like, what would happen with a new president and the war. But, Washington felt strongly that we needed to learn how to have a new leader. In conclusion, Washington was able to make the right decision for our country despite what other people thought.
