  • This is outrageous!
  • In 1764, the Parliament of England passed the Sugar Act. This forced the new American Colonies to pay higher or new taxes on almost everything they bought in the Colonies.
  • In October of 1768, English were sent to protect tax officials. On March 5, 1770 a fight broke out with the British soldiers on King Street in Boston. The colonists started to insult the soldiers. The soldiers opened fire upon some of the colonists, killing four men and a boy. This event became know as the Boston Massacre.

  • FInally, Parliament withdrew most of the taxes except for a tax upon the tea for the Colonist. This enraged some of the Colonist. The second thing that upset the colonist was that only a few special colonial agents that were selected by the British East India Company would be allowed to sell the new taxed tea.

  • The Colonist started refusing to pay the taxes on the tea. Once this started happening two of Britain's warships were commanded to block Boston Harbor. They were placed there so that no ship could leave or go out of the harbor without paying the tax on the tea.
