The first Punic War lasted 23 years, and was the first of three. Carthage had a strong navy, while Rome had the strong army. The Romans made improvements to there ships called a Corvus, which was like a movable bridge on the ship. The Romans in the end won the war and signed a peace treaty with the Carthaginians and left Sicily.
The second Punic war began in 218 B.C. The Carthaginians who were led by Hannibal, attacked Rome. They marched from Spain through southern Gaul, and then crossed the Alps mountains into Italy on elephants.
The third Punic war started 50 years after Carthage started to show signs of regaining power. The Romans attacked Carthage and burned down their city. They salted their fields so nothing would grow and took all Carthaginians into slavery.
