General Stephen F. Austin was arrested and thrown in jail by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for promoting rebellion. When Austin was released in 1835, Texas rose up in revolt. Santa Anna marched north with some 6,000 troops.

When Santa Anna gets to The Alamo, he is furious. Austin was there with his troops. As Austin and his army of Texans watched from inside The Alamo, Santa Anna raises the flag which means, "no mercy."

One of Austin's friends, William Travis, sent out messengers to other towns pleading for more soldiers.

The Texans hid out in The Alamo, firing cannons back and forth for 12 days.Finally, the Alamo was invaded and every single Texan was killed.
Days later, the Texans pulled a surprise attack on the Mexicans. They weren't ready, and that was when Texas gained its independence and won the war.

After Texas won its independence, there was disagreement over whether the States should annex Texas or not. Finally, they did. Texas was the 27th state to be added the the United States of America.
