Beowulf, "Higlac's follower and the strongest of the Geats ", sets off with his men to assist Hrothgar, his father's friends with a monster that been terrorizing his country .
Beowulf confronted Hrothgar about the things he heard, who confirmed all the rumors, and told him about the beast that was Grendal. Beowulf being the warrior that he is accepts to increase his reputation, further his legacy, and repay a family debt.
That night, after Beowulf accepts to slay Grendel, the king hosts a banquet in the mead hall with Beowulf and his men and all the other soldiers. Unannounced to them Grendel was nearby and decided to stop by. He kills one warrior before Beowulf steps in and surprises him with his inhuman strength. Beowulf rips off one of Grendel's arms before Grendel runs back to his swampland home to die.
