  • Emotions Run High Murder, Kidnapping, and defying common sense happens in the story.
  • "The Niter! It hangs like moss upon the vaults"
  • *Cough cough*
  •  The text states "within the walls thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived  a still interior crypt or recess...for no especial use..."(pg 5) The room that Montessor took Fortunato to "drink Amontillado" is a secret room, but really Fortunato's grave.
  • Foreboding Montressor's family has a Coat of Arms/ unlucky omen
  • If only this serpent was Fortunato
  • Montessor says "You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; you are happy, as I once was."(pg 3) The quote explains how alone and sad Montessor is because he ha no friends.
  • DECAY  Montressor had a Formerly Great family
  • What life was once like...
  • While walking through the catacombs, Fortunato stated "The cough's a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cold."(pg 3)  The sentence foreshadows that the cough wont kill him, but Montessor did when he first kidnapped then buried him alive.
  • Supernatural Fortunato becomes suddenly sober.
  • What are you doing?!
  • During their trip to the catacombs Montressor explained that his coat of arms was a "Foot crushing a serpent rampant whose fangs are embedded in the heel."(pg 4) This foreshadows that Montressor will get his revenge on Foruntato because he represents the foot and Fortunto is the serpent being crushed.
  • Montressor talks about how his family was once very powerful and big, but is now the opposite by saying  "The Montressors...were a great and numerous family."(pg 3) he used the word "were" meaning past tense.
  • When Montressor was burying Fortunato Poe wrote "suddenly the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off."(pg 6) It is very unatural for your drunkeness to just vanish which is  very unexplainable for Fortunato.
