  • The Americans moved west in search for land and adventure.
  • Spain allowed the Americans to use the Mississippi River to transport goods along the river and to New Orleans.
  • The Spanish changed their policy, no longer allowing American goods into and beyond New Orleans. Spain sold the Louisiana territory to France.
  • Napoleon Bonaparte sent troops to regain control of Santo Domingo, but were unsuccessful.
  • A french official sold the territory to Robert Livingston and James Monroe.
  • The senate approved the purchase of the Louisiana territory.
