  • Annemarie is brave when she is walking through the woods to Uncle Henrik's boat. The soldiers stop and talk to her. There are also dogs and the soldiers feed the dogs the food Annemarie has.

  • Ellen is sleeping over Annemarie's house and the soldiers came to the door. They searched the house to make sure they were not Jews. The family was brave because they had to pretend that Ellen was Lise so they wouldn't take her away.

  • At Great Aunt Birte's funeral, the soldiers didn't believe that the funeral was real. Annemarie had to lie to the soldiers, so they would believe she was real. Even though Great Aunt Birte was not real.

  • Ellen is sleeping over Annemarie's house. They are sitting in Annemarie's bed and they hear the soldiers coming. Annemarie rips off Ellen's necklace, so the soldiers won't know she's Jewish. This shows friendship because Annemarie is caring about Ellen.
  • Ellen and Annemarie are saying goodbye to each other. Ellen has to go to Sweden to stay safe and she says, ''I will be back.'' It shows friendship because they are very sad that they have to leave each other.
  • Annemarie's parents help everyone get to the boat through the woods, especially the Rosen's. It shows friendship because her parents are caring for everybody. They care for them, they want them to make it to Sweden to stay safe.
