Hermia and Lysander wish to be together but Egeus, Hermia's father, wants her to wed Demetrius. The Duke of Athens also agrees with Egeus. Hermia and Lysander plan to flee so they can be together. Meanwhile, Helena is upset because both men love Hermia, including the one she loves, Demetrius.
Act Two, Scene Two
Nick Bottom and others in the town are preparing a play for Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. Nick Bottom is very over confident and believes he can play any character in the play!
Titania and Oberon, King and Queen of the Fairies, have an argument and Oberon ploys revenge on his wife. Puck, his assistant is told to get a potion to make Titania fall in love with the first thing she sees. Meanwhile, the mechanicals and Nick Bottom are in the forest rehearsing their play.
Hermia and Lysander have run away into the woods to be together. Puck has been given orders from Oberon to squeeze potion into an Athenian Man's eyes (Demetrius, to make him fall in love with Helena). He has mistaken Lysander for Demetrius. When Lysander awakens, he falls in love with Helena. Meanwhile, Puck has also squeezed potion into Titania's eyes so she will fall in love with the first thing she sees.
