  • Ring!!
  • Ring!
  • Goodbye class! Have a good weekend!!
  • Mrs. Hill? Can you tell me more about the volcano eruption in Iceland and what that means for us?
  • Well, there was an eruption and the ash has settled over the Midwestern part of the US, blocking all of the sun and plunging us into a volcanic winter. We’re all going to die because the sun helps plants go through photosynthesis, and without photosynthesis plants all die. And as soon as the plants are dead, so are we.
  • So, the sun is part of photosynthesis? What does this mean for us??
  • Well, the products of photosynthesis include glucose and oxygen, both of which we need. When we get the oxygen, all animals go through cellular respiration, producing carbon dioxide, ATP energy, and water. All of this is called the energy cycle because the plants use our carbon dioxide for photosynthesis too.
  • What causes photosynthesis? Why do plants need our carbon dioxide? Isn't it ours?
  • No, we don’t want the carbon dioxide. It’s a poison that our body releases by breathing. Photosynthesis is caused when carbon dioxide, light energy from the sun, and water mix in the chloroplast, an organelle in the plant cell. Cellular respiration is caused when glucose and oxygen mix in a human body. As you can see, these two things relate very closely to one another.
  • Oh, now I get it! Without the sun, the plants can't get the light energy they need for photosynthesis. If plants don't go through photosynthesis, we don't get oxygen! It all comes back to us!!
  • The End...
  • I suppose it does! Have a good weekend and stay out of the Mid Western part of the USA!!
