  • We close the borders between the U.S. and Florida. We also closed the port of New Orleans to the U.S.
  • Darn Spanish, they closed the ports at New Orleans. This sucks, now we can't move goods down through Mississippi
  • Go talk with the Spanish and ask them to reopen the ports and open the border.
  • You Got It!
  • The Spanish had closed the borders between the U.S. and Florida. They also closed the ports of New Orleans in 1784.
  • Hmmm...
  • Please reopen the borders and reopen the ports in New Orleans. We also would like to deposit in New Orleans.
  • Since the Spanish closed the borders and ports, the U.S. couldn't move goods through Mississippi and to places in the East or overseas. They all had to pass through New Orleans, but they couldn't because of the Spanish closing the ports.
  • Hmmm... What if i just wait until they get impatient and make them desperate to sign a treaty that favors us.
  • Washington asked Thomas Pinckney to meet with the Spanish and talk about opening up the borders and ports.
  • Alright, I agree to sign your treaty. I will open back up the borders and ports. I'll also let y'all deposit in New Orleans.
  • Cewl
  • Pinckney had went to go meet with the Spanish and had asked them to open the borders and ports. He also asked for the right to deposit in New Orleans. This would let the American boats to transfer goods without having to pay cargo fees while in New Orleans.
  • Spanish Minister Manuel de Godoy had delayed reaching an agreement. He wanted to make them desperate and sign a treaty that favored the Spanish, but the Americans were patient. He didn't want the U.S. and Britain working together after Jay's Treaty.
  • In October 1795 Godoy agreed to sign Pinckney's Treaty. This opened up the borders and ports. The treaty settled the border at 31º north latitude. The treaty also let them deposit in New Orleans. Because it opened the frontier to more expansion, Washington and most Americans thought this was a very successful treaty.
