In a small town on the east coast during the mid-1940's lived a man named Mr. Whickel.
Mr. Whickel was the town lighthouse keeper, but nobody except the grocer and the laundry maid ever saw him.
Most of the town believed that the lighthouse that Mr. Whickel had lived in was haunted, except for an eight-year-old boy named Lucas.
Lucas was a shy boy who didn't like to draw attention to himself. He was an only child, so he was very used to having all of the attention. He had dark brown hair like his father and pale blue eyes like his mother.
One rainy day Lucas was walking outside with his dog Sandy and took a wrong turn. He ended up at the lighthouse by accident. Being the adventurous boy he was, he and his canine companion opened the door to the lighthouse and went in.
Before Lucas could catch him, Sandy started running up the steps, smelling something musty and old.
