I shall call him Jacob, for he came out holding his brother's heel.
JACOB STEALS ESAU'S BIRTHRIGHT
Sell me your birthright now.
Give me some stew. I'm about to die.
Okay, fine. Who cares about a stupid birthright? I don't want to care for those people. Just give me the stew.
He sounds like Jacob, but he feels like Esau.
JACOB RECEIVES ISAAC'S BLESSING
Pretend you are Esau.
“See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed! May God give you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you!”
I am Esau. Bless me now.
I can't wait to be blessed.
You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.
And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”
JACOB FLEES TO LABAN
I SWEAR I'LL KILL HIM!
Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me game and prepare for me delicious food, that I may eat it and bless you before the Lord before I die.’ And you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.” And Isaac smelled the smell of his garments and blessed him.
JACOB MEETS LABAN AND HIS FAMILY
Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother's father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.
“I am the Lord, the God of Abraham the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until have done what I have promised you.”
Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it. How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's kinsman, and that he was Rebekah's son, and she ran and told her father. Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?” “I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel.”
I am Jacob, the son of your sister, Rebekah.
I will work 7 years for your younger daughter, Rachel.
