  • The U.S had interests in constructing an interoceanic canal in Central America by themselves. They didn’t want another nation, especially a European power, like England, to interfere.

  • The Clayton-Bulwer treaty dictates that The United States and England cannot build a canal and hold absolute power over it in Central America. The Hay-Pauncefote Treaty anulated the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty, therefore giving authorization to the U.S to build an interoceanic canal and hold absolute power over it.
