The inventor of vulcanized rubber. Charles Goodyear was born in New Haven Connecticut, 1800. after 10 years of work, amidst all the disadvantages of povety and deprivation, he produced his new method of hardening gum by means of sulfur in 1844.
The story begins when Charles Goodyer's fascination with rubber became the challenge of his life. He would find a way to make rubber useful. In the next 5 years, Goodyear dedicated itself to experimeting with rubber, both in its own kitchen and in other workshops.
His discovery happening around 1839 when by accident, he dumped a container of sulfur and rubber on top of stove that was lit.
When he examined the fragments, he found that the rubber had lost its stickiness and at the same time its fluidity, the plastic and tenacious material had become a solid material, had been transformd in gum.
Goodyeard was fighting for more than 5 years in the same misery, before being able to patent his invention in 1844.
Rubber has been used as clothing material since 1823 and currently, due to its elasticity, resistance and repellency, it is used in tires, of all kinds, waterproof articles, safety suits and insulators articles, among many other thins.
