  • McLean was to old to serve in the Civil War. And the Confederates came to  borrow his house.
  • Can we use your house for the Confederates Headquarters ?
  • Sure
  • A union shell tore into the fireplace of his detached kitchen and caused an explosion in his kitchen during the first battle of Bull Run
  • Oh no !
  • The confederates used his barn for a military hospital and jail. McLean decided to leave his farm and go to another place.
  • We shall find another place to live .
  • He settled in the Appomattox court house with his family. And four years later the Civil War ended.
  • This is our new house.
  • On April 9, 1865 Confederate Colonel Charles Marshal went to the Appomattox court house and ask McLean if he could use his house for a meeting for the Union and Confederate generals.
  • Can we borrow your house for a meeting?
  • Sure
  • On April 9, 1865 Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union general Ulysses S. Grant in the Appomattox Court House.
  • I surrender.
