In the mid 1800s Scandinavia fell into poverty. This led to low wages. Us farmers also had a hard time growing crops because the soil was rocky which led to all our crops to failing.
From these problems rose the thought to move to America. This was the hardest part boat tickets were .50 cents but each mile was 25 cents which becomes a total of 1194 dollars. At the time this was a lot of money especially that we lived in poverty but for a new better life it was worth it.
Since Scandinavia as a cold climate many immigrants went to states with similar climates like Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Since we just arrived at America we were very poor therefore we could not afford most items. We lived in small houses and only bought necessities and simple item we use everyday. Lastly had to learn a new language.
When coming to America we worked manual labor jobs like farming, and blacksmith. We were especially good with these jobs because its what we did back home being a nation mostly run by agriculture.
Even though coming to America was a benefit but the living conditions were tough. Since most of us came over with our families housing was tight and on top of that we did not have much money so there was little necessities. Overall moving to America let many immigrants like us start beter lives.
