Rob Garret was the first black kid to ever go to a boarding school in Connecticut. He also meets a kid named Vinnie during dinner.
As Rob is traveling home for Thanksgiving, he meets a boy named Burns on the train to New York. They start to talk about jazz, Rob never heard about Jazz so Burns invited him to a Jazz Club. A guy named Tyrone Drove them, later, Tyrone made a mean comment to Rob and Rob said one back. Tyrone wanted to fight Rob but people held him back.
Rob went back to his hometown in Virginia for Christmas, he heard that his friends were involved in an organization to stop segregation. His parents said he should go, but his old friend Russel came by to pick him up, they said they should meet in a restaurant. They didn't get served all night and one person beat up one of the kids, they finaly got served and went home.
The conflict is segregation because Rob and his friends want to stop segregation and have equal rights in Virginia.
Vinnie was sitting in the infirmary waiting for his dad to pick him up, Rob hadn't seen him in a while so he went to see him before he left. Vinnie had told Rob what was going on and how his dad was going to pick him up. Rob felt bad for him. Vinnie thanked Rob for being such a good friend to him and they left
After Vinnie had left Rob had gone back to his dorm room and sat and thought about what had happened that weekend and what he accomplished.
