  • Philadelphia, 1787. A Constitutional Convention is held. Originally, it was to amend the Articles of Confederation, but in the end, they decided to rewrite it completely, and make a new government.
  • The meeting was extremely secret, so George Washington, who was the president of the convention, didn't allow for the windows to be open. This resulted in making the already extremely high temperatures worse.
  • James Madison took notes during the entire thing, which is the only reason we know what happened to this day.
  • Great Compromise!! :D
  • 600 pages of notes!
  • The people at the convention had a major conflict of how their government was set up. They all knew they wanted 3 main branches. However, one group supported the Virginia plan, which supported 2 houses that both had representatives based on population.
  • The other group supported the New Jersey Plan, which called for one branch with equal representatives for every state. This option appealed to smaller populated states, while the Virginia plan appealed to larger populated ones.
  • Roger Sherman created The Great Compromise, which combined the Virginia and New Jersey plan. This plan had two branches, one with representatives based on population, and the other with one representative per state. This solved the conflict between delegates.
