Storyboard Text

  • The Beginning of the Disagreement
  • I think that the ruler should be able to choose bishops.
  • No, the pope should.
  • Pope Gregory VII Announces That Popes Get To Choose Bishops
  • I get to choose bishops!
  • Both Parties Invalidate Eachother's Power
  • Forget what Pope Gregory said, you're now a bishop.
  • Yay!
  • Pope Gregory VII increased the church's power by allowing the Pope to choose a bishop.  Henry IV, the ruler at the time, disagreed and believed that the ruler should be the one to choose a bishop.
  • Bishops and Nobles Pick Sides
  • We agree with Pope Gregory!
  • Dispite what Henry IV stated, Pope Gregory VII announced that Popes got to choose bishops.
  • Henry IV Apologizes
  • Henry IV created the conflict of bishops by invalidating Pope Henry VII's claim.  He did this by choosing a bishop.
  • The Concordat of Worms
  • We agree that the church may choose bishops, but the ruler must finalise it.
  • The nobles and bishops side with Pope Gregory VII.  Pope Gregory VII also retaliates to Henry IV by telling others to ignore Henry's orders.
  • Henry IV eventually gets sick of others not following him.  He goes to Pope Gregory VII to apologize, however, Pope Gregory makes Henry wait in the snow for three days.  Afterwards, Henry's apology is accepted.  Henry IV eventually gets his revenge by removing Gregory's title of Pope.
  • Sorry for invalidating your statement.
  • Eventually, an agreement was signed that stated that the church got to choose their bishops.  It was signed by the city of Worms.
