Nick Allen is a 5th grader at Lincoln Elementary School. He is a boy with lots of ideas that sometimes get him in trouble.
Mrs. Granger is the 5th grade language arts teacher. Mrs. Granger loves the dictionary.
On the first day of class Nick asked Mrs. Granger where all the words in the dictionary come from. He was trying to distract Mrs. Granger from doing real school work. Mrs. Granger already knew what he was up to. She told him to do a book report to find out the answer.
Nick's family did lots of reading and had lots of books. He looked in the dictionary at home and other books to find the answer to his question.
The next day Nick gave a VERY long presentation to waste all the class time. After he gave the report he asked Mrs. Granger, "Who says that d-o-g means the thing that goes 'woof' and wages its tail?"
Mrs. Granger said that she and Nick and everyone else in the class and school and town and state and country decide the d-o-g means a little animal that wags its tail and barks.
