The war of 1812 was mainly started because of the British were blocking American shipping and overall insulting America. Andrew Jackson had been appointed to take charge of US forces in May of 1814, he had lead the last battle in the War of 1812 being “The Battle of New Orleans” to victory.
Jackson had ran and won the presidence of 1828, but previously in 1824 he had ran and lost. This upset his people because when John Adams won in 1824 he had agreed to allow another runner be his secretary. In 1828 Jackson’s people wanted to make sure he got the spot he deserved . They came up with what is now known today as the “Jackson Democracy” the idea behind this is that common people should control the government. Poor people supported him, rich people did not.
Giving your supporters government jobs is called a spoils system. Jackson replaced Republican officeholders with loyal democrats. He also chose to rotate people in office. This upsetted his critics. They exaggerated the number of Republican officeholders he removed, even though many of the people he removed deserved it.
Why? What did I do?
Jackson thought the national bank benefited the rich people while the poor people were the ones working. A charter was made and if Jackson signed it, none of the poor people would vote for him, but if he didn’t sign it, none of the rich people would vote for him. Jackson did not sign it, but it didn’t hurt him because there were more poor people to vote than rich. He abolished the national bank by putting all the money in state banks.
Good day, sir. Please sign the national bank charter.
I won't sign it. I support the state banks, not the national one.
In 1828 the Congress had passed a law raising tariffs, the taxes imposed by the government on goods from other countries. While the northern part of America had loved this the southern part hated it. The northern part had many factories that would soon outsell their competitors. The southern had to now pay more for goods and many southerners were worried about this law ruining there trade. Jackson soon realized how this was affecting the southerners and signed a new law that would lower the tariffs, but to many states the tariffs were still not low enough. South Carolina was one of these states, at one point they were threatening to secede from the US due to the tariffs.
Please lower these tariffs!
Thank you for raising the tariffs!
In the 1830s, thousands of Cherokees were forced to leave their homeland and were driven west on the “Trail of Tears”. The Cherokee Natives were willing to do a lot of things for the U.S. government, like limit their land and dress and speak like the Europeans. But, they did not want to sell their land. Even though they had worked with the settlers and had been allies during the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson did not want them close to the U.S. territory so they were driven to the west.
Sorry, we're moving all of the Natives west of the Mississippi soon.
