The French Revolution lasted 10 years from 1789 to 1799. It began July 14, when revolutionaries had stormed a prison called the Bastille. It came to an end when Napoleon overthrew the revolutionary government and established the French Consulate.

One of the factors was the social and political system . People were divided into three large social classes called estates. In the 1st Estate were the clergy, 2nd were the nobility and the most common was the 3rd estate which was made up of the common people.
The Storm of the Bastille
In 1789, King Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates General, it was the first meeting called since 1614. He called the meeting because the French Government was having financial problems. Each estate got one vote.
The Great Fear
The National Assembly had been locked out of their meeting room, which they broke down a door to an indoor tennis court. They pledged to stay there until they had made up a new constitution.
We have rights!
On July 14, 1789 a mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille, a Paris prison, after rumor had got out that Louis was going to use military to dismiss the National Assembly. Attackers filled the streets with the dead men's head on pikes.
The Great Fear was a wave of insensible panic through France where peasants became outlaws themselves. Peasants were armed with pitchforks and farm tools, they broke into nobels' houses and burned documents that made them pay feudal dues.
