•Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) 1961 was the ANC's military wing. •Unlike the PAC they avoided the innocent.
#3: Trials Treason Trial 1956-1961 •156 people were accused but were eventually exonerated. •Nelson Mandela was one of the 156, and he became the "face" of ANC.
Rivonia Trial 1963/1964 •The leadership of ANC/MK were arrested and sentenced life in prison. •Mandel gave a famous speech at the trial that lead to a world wide movement.
#2: Apartheid Laws •The Group Areas Act of 1950 - Separate residential areas for each race group. Forced people out of their home to move into the Bantustands/Homelands. •Pass Laws - Non-whites had to carry their pass books at all times or they got arrested. It was the white's way of keeping track of them and controlling them.
#1: Sharpeville 1960 •A non-violent protest in Sharpeville turned into a massacure. •Protesters weren't arrested, they were shot down. •~69 people killed, ~180 people wounded and some later died. •Government Response: banned ANC & PAC, and mass arrests. •The Sharpeville shooting was a major turning point in South Aftrica.
