  • Mary Ann Evans was born in Bellstead ,England in 1829, she could read write and was not married .
  • Mary Ann worked as a house maid in a large house. She cleaned, polished, swept and slept in a small room under the eaves which she shared with another house maid .
  • Mary Ann was 17 when she was caught stealing a watch and was convicted at at Stafford and sentenced to ten years in the penal colonies in Van Diemens Land [now known as Tasmania ]
  • Mary Ann set sail on the 8th of may 1846 on the Sea Queen with 170 other female convicts. After three months on the sea queen they finally arrived in van Diemens Land.
  • Life was hard As a convict ,Mary would have worked up to 12 hours a day making clothes, mending linen and doing laundry.
  • On the 9/1/1856 Mary Ann Evans got her certificate of freedom, she had served ten years. Like many other convict's she built her life here in Van Diemens Land.
